Vitalik discussed the history of account abstraction development and the latest technology at the EthCC Paris conference.
On July 18, at the EthCC conference in Paris, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin elaborated on the history and latest technologies of "account abstraction". Vitalik emphasized the importance of account abstraction, which provides a unified interaction interface for smart contract accounts and regular accounts, simplifying user experience while enhancing Ethereum's flexibility and applicability.
Vitalik first reviewed the early ideas of account abstraction, including attempts to transfer all complexity to the smart contract layer, and highlighted some historic proposals such as EIP 86. He also discussed several key issues with account abstraction in detail, such as how to handle the relationship between packagers and miners, and how to handle transaction fee payments.
He introduced some new Ethereum proposals, such as ERC-4337, which attempts to implement account abstraction through the contract layer without changing the Ethereum protocol, allowing multiple user operations to be performed in one transaction. He also mentioned a unique payer mechanism (Paymasters), allowing other participants such as smart contracts to perform currency conversions, and users can even pay transaction fees using stablecoins like USDC.
Vitalik also mentioned a novel signature aggregation technology, which can merge multiple signatures into a smaller, more easily verifiable object, saving data and gas fees. This is particularly important for Rollup, as in Rollup, most transaction size comes from signatures.
Finally, Vitalik emphasized the various attempts and progress being made in account abstraction, including integration into existing wallets, standardizing cross-L2 protocols, and allowing existing EOA to upgrade to smart contracts. He expressed positive expectations for this process and looks forward to seeing more innovation in this field in the future.
